TOP class junior rugby union came to the Southern Highlands on Sunday when Sydney’s Oakhill College first XV took on the NSW Country Under-18s in Visy Recycling’s Bundanoon Cup at Bundanoon Oval.
The weekend raised more than $5000 for the Mark Leslie Foundation with Russell Fairfax, Glenn Ella, Alex Kanaar and Kurtley Beale regaling the audience at a fundraising dinner on Saturday night with tales of on-field skill and daring during their collective state and international rugby careers.
In the Cup game on Sunday the country boys won 40-21 after leading 28-14 at halftime.
Country’s quick backs spun the ball wide to register the first of their nine tries in the seventh minute.
Bowral’s Jack Gates got the Cockatoos second but Oakhill’s big ISA representative Shaun Vengoa got the visitors on the board to make it 14-7.
Country scored twice more through Luke and captain John McGlynn, who doubled around his inside centre to cut the Oakhill backs apart and run 20 metres to the line.
The second half was a replica of the first with both forward backs not giving an inch and creating numerous scoring opportunities for their backs.
