BUNDANOON were prepped for a massive game against heavyweights Avondale at Bundanoon Oval on Saturday after mid-week training sessions by trainer Cliff Knapman had the Highlanders breathing fire.
Bundanoon took an early lead in the match due to some poor discipline by Avondale and two quick penalties by Josh Grant had Bundy scooting to a 6-0 lead.
The six-points shook Avondale into action and they responded with a good try to their huge number eight who swatted off numerous Bundy defenders and barged over the line.
The Highlanders have lifted the intensity and a good chase on a down field kick by speed man Pete Randazzo was rewarded with a try to Pat Shields. It was converted and the Highlanders were back in front 13-7.
Fearing an upset, Avondale put some sting into their defence and Bundy front-rower Max Eccelston took a huge hit from Avondale’s big number eight.
The hit lifted the Avondale and they scored a converted try on the break to leaf 14-13.
The see-sawing match continued after halftime and Bundanoon got their nose in front again with a long-range penalty by Grant who was slotting them over from all over the park in an El-Masri style display.
The Highlanders’ lead was short lived and two more tries by Avondale had them running out winners 24-16.
It was a good display from the Highlanders, and the pride is now well and truly back.
The player’s player points went to Shields 1, Grant 2, and Eccelston 3, for taking the biggest hit seen at Bundanoon Oval.
