BOWRAL played good rugby but still lost 17-15 against third-placed Vincentia on Saturday, according to coach Val Tyson.
The Blacks suffered from a poor start in their last match but had no such troubles this time around.
The two teams traded early blows and a share of possession in an end-to-end opening.
Vincentia scored first after 10 minutes to take a 7-0 lead but the Blacks responded by stepping up their attack.
Bowral were awarded a penalty inside Vincentia’s red zone and opted to take the three points.
Jake Moore made it 7-3.
Five minutes later the Blacks turned over the ball inside their own half and five forwards phases drove them upfield.
The phases were a combination of pick n’ drives and rolling mauls and they ended up in the right hand corner.
The forward’s domination paved way for the backs, who spread the ball across the field and Daniel Gates scored in the corner.
Moore converted from the touchline to make it 10-7 and it was 10-7 at the break.
Moore opened the scoring in the second half with an unconverted try as Bowral spun the ball right and Moore dived over in the corner.
But Vincentia bounced back with another two tries in the second half to take the competition points.
“There we a lot of turnovers in our game and that’s a product of not getting good practice,” Tyson said.
“We have heaps of blokes out with the flu and what not and it has hurt our preparation.”
Tyson said Jack and Daniel Gates received the points for best and fairest, while Andrew Nickell and Matt van Zyl also picked up a point.
The coach said his team was continuing to improve with every game.
“That try we scored was a measure of how good we can be,” he said.
“We put together five or six phases and a backline movement to top it off.
“The team’s getting better all the time and it’s a credit to them.”
