HE played fullback, halfback, five-eighth, inside centre and just about everywhere else in the Blacks’ backline, but Jack Gates was rewarded with a swag of awards at the Bowral Rugby Union awards night last weekend.
Gates won the prizes for best back, best and fairest and players player.
The strong-running and skilful back was one of the shining lights in a tough season for the Blacks.
Unable to field a first grade team due to the loss of key players from 2008, Bowral won only a handful of games playing in second grade this year.
But the club’s youngsters, including the likes of Gates, stepped up and showed they have the mettle to compete in seasons going forward.
Bowral Rugby Club president Tony Fountain is confident of fielding a first grade team against next season.
His plans are to have a first and second grade side and an under-20s team in the new colts competition.
He also hinted at the possibility of the club’s Wilted Tulips running around under the Blacks banner in third grade.
Other awards on presentation night went to:
*Best forward - Corey Ahling
*Most improved - Jake Moore and James O’Connor
*Clubman of the year - Robert Taylor
*Presidents shield- Dane Basten
