BUNDANOON shooter Peter Papps picked up two golds and a bronze medal at the World Masters Games in Sydney last fortnight.
The former Olympian won the 100-metre target double barrel, the 100m target point score and finished third in the 100m target skeet.
“You never expect anything in shooting,” he said, wisely.
“You can very easily have a good day or a bad day.
“I had a couple of pretty good days.”
Up against the best shooters from Australia, New Zealand, England and Canada in the 70-plus division, Papps shot over four days to claim three medals.
He said it capped a 58-year career in shooting that started when he was only 12.
He quickly rose through the ranks to shoot for Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics when he was only 18 in pistol shooting.
Papps represented Australia in shotguns on another three occasions, the last of which was 1976.
“I gave shooting away for a number of years, because of family commitments and a few other things,” he said.
“But now I have been back for a number of years and enjoying it.”
Papps shoots as part of the Moss Vale Gun Club at Berrima, which coincidently has a meeting tomorrow.
He said he would be at the meet offering advice to new shooters.
“I don’t think I will be participating this weekend but I will be there as part of the workforce,” he said.
“I am happy to help anyone who is interested in shooting and am very keen to help junior or young shooters in particular.”
Papps said it was easy to get started in the sport.
“You just need to know where to go and then the members of the club will make you feel welcome,” he said.
“It isn’t really hard to get started, just turn up.”
