Defence not an option in draw

HIGHLANDS United and Kiama fought out a high scoring 4-4 draw in their round 16 Peoplecare District league clash at Kiama on Saturday.

The reserves won1-0, while the depleted youth garders suffered their first defeat in five rounds, going down 2-1.

Both first grade sides failed to turn up with their defences and Highlands led 4-3 at the break. Kiama got the equaliser and only goal of the second term, 10 minutes from the end.

In a seesawing opening 45 minutes, Kiama shot ahead 2-0 after just eight minutes before Will Jacobs got the visitors on the board with a header from a John Friedwald cross.

Jed Hilmi then drew Highlands level 2-2 right from the kick-off from a Scott Friedewald pass. Kiama struck back to lead 3-2 at the 30 minute mark, but Hilmi again showed his offensive capabilities by beating Kiama’s backline and drawing United level again, at 3-3.

Gavin Wise gave United the lead for the first time right on halftime when he hit in a John Friedewald cross on the far post, which deflected off Kiama’s goalkeeper into the net.

United coach Brian Hollywood said it was disappointing not to get all the points, but his under-strength outfit put in a good effort.
