Top two put the test by finals hopefuls

THE Highlands first grade final series, which starts this Saturday, is shaping as a tight contest after the top two teams came away with draws in the last round on Saturday.

Robertson-Burrawang drew 1-1 with Patris while Yerrinbool-Bargo took out the minor premiership with a 1-1 draw against Exeter. Both teams fought back from early 1-0 deficits to split the points.

Patris Dan Riley made a triumphant return from suspension with a goal in the fourth minute at Hampden Park after skipper Tom Simmons found him open in the box.

Robertson’s Adam Bartlett equalised in the 40th minute after he beat several defenders and beat the goalkeeper with a good left foot strike into the right side of the net.

Patris’ player-coach Simon Roberts said Robertson dominated the second half and his team was focused on pulling out a draw to keep their finals hopes alive.
