Yes, it’s winter and there’s every need for warmth - roaring fires, heaters, jumpers and blankets. Even the mop on top can help raise a few degrees.
But when it comes to supporting a good cause, like raising money for a sick child and improving local medical facilities, small sacrifices seem to be the least we can do.
Michael Stokes is a good man who wanted to help out a family in need - the Wilsons, whose one-year-old daughter Maeve suffers from leaukemia and is hospital bound while she receives treatment.
His idea to organise the ‘Shave 4 Maeve’ appeal (see front page) has been well-received, as usual, by a responsive and generous Highlands community.
A dozen people, including yours truly, have offered to shave their hair clean off in Corbett Plaza on Saturday, August 9, at the height of winter.
I’ve never met the Wilsons, but I see the value in rallying behind a family in need. It could be my family in that posistion one day.
Better still, half the money raised will be directed to furnishing Bowral Hospital’s new Children’s Ward, which allows families like the Wilsons the chance to receive the necessary medical treatment locally, rather than travelling the highway to Sydney.
The Highlands is a community that digs deep on a constant basis, and the promotion of better local facilities is a cause steeped in merit.
There’s less than three weeks to go until the public shave, and it’s hoped that residents and businesses will spare some money for the appeal.
If you’re approached for sponsorship by a Shave 4 Maeve participant, think of all the Southern Highlands families that will benefit from having a high-standard children’s ward in the community. It doesn’t leave many out of the equation.
I think my hair-do is stylish and helps identify me in the crowd. But there are simply more important things in life, and helping others is one of them.
