THEY really can be a vile lot, politicians. To rely on the apathy of those they supposedly decree to serve shows their discontempt for the populous.
The latest scam comes on the back of a pretty darn accurate appraisal - that pollies have, for too long, taken advantage of the perks of their office.
A parliamentary renumeration tribunal recently outlined the number of sickening ways politicians rort the system and was supposed to be a catalyst for change. To genuine people, this usually means a change for the better.
Instead, we see NSW MPs demanding a $77.55 daily meal allowance for doing nothing more than turning up to their job. I’m heading into my manager’s office right now to demand the same... that was quick, I got shown his boot and the door.
The disgusting waste of taxpayers money - what’s wrong with a $10 foccaccia - is part of several requested changes to pollie allowances.
Another consideration is to give MPs who are ousted early in their term a redundancy payout of up to $40,000 to help them “resettle”, although this will require a change in legislation.
I’m just back from the manager’s office and my backside is even sorer.
Tabling the demands to parliament on the day before a two-month recess is a blatant attempt to quell public anger over the grabs for our cash.
Thankfully the tribunal flicked a request from some MPs to get a $20,000 allowance for overnight stays in Sydney when visiting Parliament.
Sorry, I thought NSW was cash-poor?
As their bosses, taxpayers should say how much pollies get and what they get it for. And we should be able to show them our boot and the door where appropriate. It works for my manager!
